SGN Gas Main replacement works from 21 September 2020

Southern Gas Network (SGN) is planning to upgrade the gas network in Goldsmid Road, Tonbridge. The works were temporarily postponed from March due to UK Government advice.

This safety-critical project needs to go ahead, rather than wait until the coronavirus pandemic passes, to ensure the local community continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply. The project involves the essential replacement of old metal gas mains with new plastic pipe.

In consultation with Kent County Council, SGN will be restarting the project on Monday 21 September for approximately 11 weeks. SGN’s contractor Medway Civils & Utilities will carry this work out on their behalf.

Engineers will be working in Goldsmid Road from outside number 38 to the junction with Pembury Road. For everyone’s safety, temporary multi-way lights will be installed around the work. These lights will be manually controlled between 7.30 – 9am and 2.30 – 4.30pm to assist with school and general traffic flow.

From Monday 12 October for approximately three weeks, we will be working on Royal Avenue from outside number 27 to the junction with Goldsmid Road. During this time, it will be necessary to close this part of Royal Avenue. A signed diversion will be in place via Mountfield Park and King’s Road.

SGN are working closely with the UK Government and public health bodies to make sure they work in line with expert advice during the pandemic. They have extra safety precautions in place to protect their colleagues and the communities from catching or spreading the virus as they carry out this safety-critical project. SGN’s engineers are happy to answer questions at any time during the project. Please remember to keep a safe distance when speaking to the team or passing our site.

SGN understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, residents and businesses will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

SGN will be writing to residents and other local stakeholders to make them aware of the project and explain the details of the work.
